Product Name | Victorian Sterling Silver Fish Service for 12 in Original Fitted Box, Dated 1870 |
Product Description | |
An exceptional Victorian sterling silver fish service for 12 in the original presentation box. English sterling silver hallmarks for Sheffield 1870; the times, blades and handles are all sterling silver and fully hallmarked. The silversmith is Martin, Hall & Co. (Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall) of Shrewsbury Works, Sheffield, England. “RM over EH” in a quatrefoil was the trademark the company used circa 1863-78. The British Registry Design Number dates the patent to February 18, 1868. The exuberant Victorian design is decorated front and back on both the tines/blades and the handles. The knife blades are equally ornamented on both sides with a fish swimming in the reeds, so the set can be equally enjoyed by the left-handed. The set is crested at the handle end with an engraving of a stag and left blank on the reverse. The box is mahogany with a burled wood veneered top. The inlaid brass shield on the cover was never engraved. A handsome set in remarkable condition. The forks are 7 1/4” (18.5cm) long. The knives are 8 3/4” (22.2cm) long. The box is 14 1/2” (36.8cm) by 10 1/2” (26.6cm), 2 1/2” (6.4cm) high. |
