Product Description

Victorian sterling silver hunt scene tankard, english hallmarked for London 1869.

The silversmith is Robert Harper of Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, London, whose work dated circa 1853-82.  The tankard is also engraved by the retailer on the bottom:

Manoah Rhodes & Son, Silversmiths Bradford.

Manoah Rhodes (1810-1881) was a prolific jeweller in northern England, establishing his own business in 1836.

This exuberantly decorated tankard depicts hounds chasing a hare on 2/3 of the body with an extensive presentation engraving on the reverse.  The animals, trees and rolling hills are chased in high relief on a Georgian baluster shaped tankard, with a decorated pedestal foot. The applied S and C scroll handle is topped with a chased acanthus leaf thumb grip.  The interior is gold washed and in good condition.
