Product CodeWATTOR5637
Product NameVictorian Watcombe Terracotta Enamelled Vases
Product Description

Victorian Watcombe terra cotta vases, made by Watcombe Pottery, circa 1869-1891.  The fine red Devon clay was discovered circa 1865 on the grounds of Watcombe House, with the factory becoming known as the Watcombe Terracotta Clay Company, established in 1869.

The first few decades Watcombe specialized in classical styles produced in terracotta.  The shapes were influenced by antiquity, including busts, jugs, urns and amphora vases, such as these.

These lovely vases have turquoise enamelled exterior details and interior.   Highlights and rims are gilded.  Some of the enamel decorated terracotta was influenced by the designs of Christopher Dresser.

Stamped Watcombe Torquay and painted 2578 on the bottom of both vases.

9 1/8” (23.2cm) high, 5 1/2” (14cm) diameter.

The vases are in excellent condition.

$3900 for the pair.
