Product Description

Vintage hand carved Basswood sculpture with Canadian provenance.   A geologist is depicted kneeling, holding a pick in his right hand, and examining an ore sample in his left.

Carved by Canadian sculptor Charles Paxy (1916-2002).  Paxy was born in Hungary, living briefly in Germany after WWII.  While in Germany he had two exhibitions of his carvings, circa 1947.  The Paxy family emigrated to Canada in 1950, settling in Sudbury, ON.  He worked for INCO’s Creighton Mine for 3O years before retiring to devote his time fully to carving.  Paxy was known for his Basswood carvings of miners.

Presented to The Honourable Pauline Mills McGibbon (1910-2001) the 22nd Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, in office 1974-80.  Ms. McGibbon was the first female Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, and thus became the first female Governor in all of Canada.
