Basil Matthews (1913-85) was born in Abergavenny, Wales. As a small child he was taken to see the traveling circuses and fairs that would come to the local park. It fuelled his interest in animals, especially horses, elephants and bears. He started taking modelling clay to the park to capture what he saw. Matthews opened his own studio in the late 1940s, specializing in fanciful representations of animals. They were modelled by hand and limited in production to about 100 each.
He received an endorsement from Queen Mary for his work. Matthews was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Member of The Society of Industrial Artists and Designers, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Design Craftsmen.
