Antique Villeroy & Boch Mettlach Stein

Product Details

Antique Villeroy & Boch Mettlach stein with pewter cover and hinged mount.  Trademarked with the green Mercury stamp Villeroy & Boch Mettlach (used circa 1874-1909), 1078 Gesschutzt and the impressed numbers 33  1909  08.

1909 is the PUG (print-under-glaze) form/shape and 08 signified 1908 as the year of production.  Signed above the dice by the designer H (Heinrich) Schlitt.

The stein depicts a stout man wearing a 17th century style ruffled collar.  In his right hand he holds a pipe with dice nearby.  His left hand grips a stein decorated with a courting scene, with the cover up to receive more ale and playing cards in the background.  The symbols are that of a man’s vices:  drinking, gambling and smoking; an older version of “wine, woman and song”.

6 3/4” (17.2cm) high to the top of the finial / thumb grip.
