Fig. 10

The fact that the light of the sun is the source of all changing hues to be found on the surface of the earth season after season was first discovered by Newton, and his experiments are easily repeated with a very few and inexpensive appliances. Page 85

The fourth experiment, which is somewhat more difficult for the students to accomplish consists in causing every one of the seven different colours to reflected from separate mirrors. The mirrors in this case are concave and are so mounted as to be capable of being moved in any direction. By directing each of the 7 rays, one by one, upon the same point, you may observe the gradual decomposition of coloured light. The effect obtained by adding the last colour to the mixture is quite magical, the white circle being produced from two brilliantly coloured spots. Page 87-88

The company was founded in 1876. One of the most famous instrument makers of the beginnings of the 20th century.

  1. The Recomposition of Light---Mirrors on Stand, c. late 19th century. In use one can place a prism in a beam of light, thereby projecting a continuously coloured spectrum. The present mirrors, placed in the spectrum, can be directed to send all colours to a single spot, which spot will be white. The light decomposed by the prism has been recomposed, a possibility discovered by Newton in the 17th century. Kohl Catalogue.
