Early Victorian sterling silver three piece tea set, fully hallmarked for Edinburgh 1839 *. From the silversmith firm of James and Walter Marshall, with their trademark first registered in 1817. The set is ornately decorated with raised floral and foliate repousse work and scrolled bracket feet. The cream jug and sugar bowl interiors have the original gilding. The original monograms in Script, possibly “PP” are intact on all three pieces. The set consists of a teapot, cream jug and open sugar bowl. The teapot is 7” (17.8cm) high to the top of the handle and 11 1/4” (28.5cm) in length from the spout to handle. 1510.4 grams total. $5800 for the three piece set.
* Although Queen Victoria’s reign started in 1837, both the Glasgow and Edinburgh assay office continued to use the duty mark (the Sovereign’s head in profile) of William IV until 1840. |
